Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router to increase WiFi range

How to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router to increase range. Because the router which is given with Jio Fiber connection does not have a good WiFi range.

Why Jio Fiber Router is bad?

The router or home gateway which is given with Jio Fiber connection is very bad. It is made in China & we don’t know which hardware is used. It gets heated very soon. This Jio fiber router is dual-band. But it doesn’t have an external antenna. For this WiFi, the range is quite low.

This router also does not have MIMO. For this WiFi, bandwidth becomes very slow when you connect multiple devices. One access point of the Jio Fiber Router only allows 22 devices to connect. That means a total of 44 (22 each for 2.4G & 5G) devices can be connected via WiFi.

How to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router

There are 3 ways to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router. The first one is wireless repeater mode, the second one is via Ethernet cable in the WAN port & the last one is via Ethernet cable in LAN port.

The wireless repeater mode is not good. As I said earlier it doesn’t have any MIMO & Wifi speed is slow in Jio Router. So this process will not be effective.

In the second process, we have to attach an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports of the Jio Fiber router. Another end of the cable we have to connect in WAN port of the other router. In this process, the Internet will work. But there will be two problems. It will use again NAT in the network. So another routing point will increase which will increase ping time slightly. As the Jio router & old router network will be different, we will not be able to access network devices attached to the Jio router from the old router access point & vice versa.

Another major problem is Jio router is VoIP enabled. So we can voice call using Jio call mobile application when connected to the Jio fiber router. But we will not be able to use voice call when we are connected to the old router’s WiFi. Because the gateway will be the old router’s IP, not the Jio Fiber router’s IP.

In this tutorial, we will use the third process i.e LAN to LAN port. This will overcome all the problems of previous methods to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router.

Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router

Connection Wiring between Jio router & old router

We will need two Ethernet cable to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router. One wire should be connected to the Jio Fiber router LAN port. Another end of that wire will be connected to the LAN port of the old router. Next, take another Ethernet cable and insert it into another LAN port of the old router. Another end of the second cable will be inserted into the desktop.

In the above picture, grey wire is coming from Jio Fiber router, and blue wire is going into desktop.

Technical settings in old router

Now come to the technical part to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router. Do not change anything in the Jio Fiber router admin panel. Keep it as default. Make sure Bridge mode is disabled in Jio Router.

Open old router’s admin panel. In my case, the TP-link admin panel default IP is “192.168.0.1“. In the admin panel settings go to LAN settings & change the IP to “192.168.29.2“. Because the default IP of the Jio Fiber router is “192.168.29.1“. So by changing the IP in the old router both router will be on the same network.

Next, disable the DHCP server in the old router. In my case, it is a TP-link router. By doing this IP address of the connected device will be assigned by the Jio Fiber router. This method also called “Using a router as switch” to Connect Jio Fiber Router with old Router.

Will Voice call work?

As both routers will be on the same network & the gateway will be the Jio Fiber router we will be able to use the Voice call benefits of our plan. To use voice calling just download the Jio call app on your mobile & enjoy.

Internet Speed

This method to Connect Jio Fiber Router with the old Router will not reduce Internet speed as we connected over a LAN cable. But remember old router is not a gigabit router. It is a 100mbps router. So we will not get a speed of more than 100mbps. To use plans over 100mbps we have to buy a gigabit router or have to use a reduced 10mbps speed.

In this way, you can Connect Jio Fiber Router with the old Router to use the Internet with voice calling & ipv6 from the old router.

In a recent update from Jio, Wirelessly range extending not working as Ambani wants to make money by selling their poor product like “Jio Mesh”
